About Thunderbird Lodge
Thunderbird Lodge was built between 1936 and 1939 for George Whittell Jr., a millionaire from San Francisco who bought much of Lake Tahoe’s east shore. The stone-and-wood lakeside mansion was designed by an architect known for park-style buildings.
The guided tour covers the main house, the guest house, an approximately 180-meter tunnel carved into the rock that links the house to the boathouse, and the boathouse itself, which houses a 1930s wooden launch.
Because of Whittell’s purchases, which prevented subdivision of the shore, much of the lake’s east shore remains forested and undeveloped. The house is owned by a nonprofit organization and is a historic landmark.
