About Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon cuts across west Kauai for about 16 km, reaching up to 900 meters deep. It formed from a combination of the collapse of part of the ancient volcano that created the island and erosion by the Waimea River, fed by rains on Mount Waiʻaleʻale. The walls show layers of old lava flows in shades of red, ochre, brown and green.

The nickname Grand Canyon of the Pacific has been used for a long time, although its scale is smaller than Arizona’s canyon. What sets Waimea apart is the mix of exposed rock and vegetation, the waterfalls cascading down the cliffs, such as Waipoʻo, and the changing light throughout the day.

Waimea Canyon State Park protects the area. Highway 550, which leaves Waimea town, climbs along the canyon’s west rim, and the Waimea Canyon Lookout, the main viewpoint, sits at about 1,000 meters elevation, with views toward the valley floor and the Waipoʻo waterfall in the distance.

It is cooler at the top than on the coast, and clouds often cover the canyon in the afternoon. non-Hawaii visitors pay for parking in the park.
