About Wailua River and Fern Grotto

The Wailua River rises on the slopes of Mount Waiʻaleʻale and empties on Kauai’s east coast, about 10 km from Lihue toward Kapaʻa. The valley around its mouth was a political and religious center for the island’s chiefs. Today it is part of Wailua River State Park, which includes sites such as stone temples, birth rocks where chiefs’ children were born and ancient terraces.

Tour boats depart the marina near the mouth and travel about 3 km upriver between forested banks and coconut palms. Along the way, musicians and dancers perform songs and hula. The landing leads to a short trail through the forest to the Fern Grotto, an opening in a lava rock covered with hanging ferns and water dripping from the edges.

At the grotto, groups often hear a Hawaiian wedding song, and many couples choose the place for ceremonies. The round-trip tour takes about an hour and a half.

The river is also traveled by kayak, on guided tours or with rentals, along the lower stretch of the course.
