About Six Flags Great Adventure

Six Flags Great Adventure opened in 1974 in an area of forests and lakes in inland New Jersey and became one of the largest amusement parks in the eastern United States. It is divided into themed areas around a lake, with roller coasters, thrill rides, Ferris wheels, children’s areas and shows.

Among the most sought-after roller coasters are El Toro, a wooden coaster with a very steep drop; Nitro, a steel coaster with long hills and drops; and the Jersey Devil Coaster, a single-rail coaster. There are also family-sized rides and an area with characters for very young children.

The Wild Safari, next to the park, is a drive-through route through open areas where giraffes, elephants, rhinoceroses, zebras and other animals live, done in the park’s own vehicles. Access is usually included with admission, with its own schedule.

The park opens in March and runs until early January, with Halloween events in the fall and Christmas decorations at the end of the year. Outside summer, it is open only on selected days of the week.
