About Emlen Physick Estate
The Emlen Physick Estate was built in 1879 for Dr. Emlen Physick, from a Philadelphia family, and is attributed to architect Frank Furness. It’s an example of the Stick style, with exposed wooden structure, steep roofs and tall chimneys, different from the lacy houses downtown.
The house remained with the family until the 1970s, when it was at risk of demolition. A group of residents saved it and created the organization that now cares for the museum and other historic sites in town, Cape May MAC.
The guided tour goes through the rooms with period furniture, wallpapers and objects, and explains the daily life of a wealthy family in a seaside town. The gardens and the carriage house at the rear host temporary exhibitions.
At Christmas, the house is decorated in Victorian style and hosts themed visits, one of the town’s traditions.
