About Steel Pier
Steel Pier opened in 1898 and, in the early decades of the 20th century, was Atlantic City’s major performance stage, with orchestras, cinema, shows and the famous act of horses jumping from a platform into the water. Fires and storms reduced the pier, which today extends about 300 meters over the sea in front of the boardwalk.
The pier operates as an amusement park: it has a carousel, children’s rides, family-sized roller coasters, thrill rides of height, prize games and snack stands. The most visible attraction from a distance is the Ferris wheel, The Wheel, at about 69 meters tall with enclosed cabins offering views of the beach, the island and the hotels.
Entry to the pier does not require a ticket; you pay per ride with credits or with an unlimited-use wristband. The crowd is families with children and people who want a short evening outing when the pier is lit.
The main season runs from spring to fall, with more operating days in summer; the Ferris wheel usually operates during more months of the year.
