About Atlantic City Boardwalk

Atlantic City’s boardwalk was built in 1870 so visitors would not track sand into the hotels and train cars. It was the first of its kind in the United States and became the city’s main axis: it runs for kilometers along the beach, as far as neighboring Ventnor, with the sea on one side and hotels, casinos and shops on the other.

In the central section are Boardwalk Hall, a 1929 auditorium that hosted the Miss America pageant for decades and houses one of the world’s largest pipe organs, and the piers that extend over the sea, such as Steel Pier and Garden Pier. Plaques and benches note that the city’s street names inspired the properties in the Monopoly board game.

A local tradition is the covered rolling chairs pushed by attendants along the planks since the late 19th century. They act as boardwalk taxis and are paid for separately.

The beach in front is wide and free to access. In summer there are lifeguards in marked sections, and the boardwalk is busier at night, when the hotel signs light up.
