About Clingmans Dome
Kuwohi is the park’s and Tennessee’s highest peak, at 2,025 meters. The Cherokee name, meaning “place of mulberry trees,” was made official in 2024 in place of Clingmans Dome, and the peak is sacred to the Cherokees.
An about 11 km road leaves Newfound Gap Road and ends at a parking area near the summit. From there, an approximately 800-meter paved path, quite steep, climbs to the 1959 concrete observation tower, which has a spiral ramp. On clear days the view reaches for tens of kilometers.
Temperatures at the top are often several degrees lower than in the valleys, and haze can hide the view. The road closes in winter, generally from December to March.
