About Whitefish Lake
Whitefish Lake is about 11 km long and extends north from the town between forested hills and Big Mountain. The water, of glacial origin, is cold even in summer.
At the southern tip, by town center, is the City Beach with sand, lawn, swimming area and kayak and paddleboard rentals. Boats offer lake tours, and Whitefish Lake State Park on the west shore has camping and a swim area.
The town grew on the lake’s southern tip in the early 20th century with the railroad, and many seasonal homes line the shores. In winter parts of the lake freeze, and the lake hosts winter events organized by the town.
