About Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park was established in 1915 and protects a section of the Rocky Mountains with more than 60 peaks above 3,700 meters, the highest being Longs Peak at 4,346 meters. The Continental Divide runs north–south through the park.
The park has three environments that follow altitude: prairie valleys and pine forests, subalpine forests, and, above about 3,500 meters, alpine tundra, which covers roughly one third of the area. Elk, bighorn sheep, marmots and moose are commonly seen along the roads.
Trail Ridge Road crosses the park from Estes Park to Grand Lake, and the Bear Lake area concentrates the most popular trails. In summer and early autumn there is a timed entry reservation system for cars, in addition to the entrance fee. International visitors may pay an extra fee: check the park website.
