About Trail Ridge Road
Trail Ridge Road crosses Rocky Mountain National Park from Estes Park in the east to Grand Lake in the west, over a route of about 77 km. It is the highest continuously paved road in the United States, reaching 3,713 meters, and runs for about 18 km above the treeline.
Along the way, overlooks such as Many Parks Curve, Rock Cut and Forest Canyon show glacial valleys and mountain peaks. Near the top, the Alpine visitor center, at about 3,600 meters, has exhibits on the tundra and a short trail, the Alpine Ridge, that climbs to an even higher viewpoint. Marmots and bighorn sheep often appear near the road.
The road closes in winter, generally from mid‑October until the end of May, because of snow. Even when open, it can close for a few hours during storms.
