About Red Rocks (Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre)

Red Rocks sits at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, near the town of Morrison, about 25 km west of downtown Denver. The park protects large tilted red sandstone formations, raised at the same time the mountains were formed.

Between two of these rocks, Ship Rock and Creation Rock, an open-air amphitheater was built in the 1930s and opened in 1941, with stone seating for about nine thousand people. The natural acoustics and the view of Denver behind the stage make the amphitheater one of the country’s best-known concert venues, from April to October.

On days without shows the amphitheater is open to visitors, and many people climb the seating up and down for exercise. The visitor center houses Colorado’s music hall of fame, and short trails, like the Trading Post, pass between the rocks.
