About Colorado State Capitol

The Colorado State Capitol was built between 1886 and 1908 from local granite on a hill in downtown Denver. The dome is covered with gold leaf in homage to the gold rush that founded the state, and the interior features rare Beulah pink marble used in floors and columns.

On the west staircase a step is inscribed One Mile Above Sea Level, one mile above sea level, and other markers placed later indicate more precise altitude measurements. From the steps, on clear days, you can see the Rocky Mountains.

The building remains the seat of the state’s legislature and government and offers guided tours, including the rotunda, legislative chambers and, at certain times, access to the dome gallery.
