About Talkeetna Historic District

Talkeetna sits at the confluence of the Susitna, Chulitna and Talkeetna rivers, about 185 km north of Anchorage. It began in the early 20th century as a trading and mining post and grew with the construction of the Alaska Railroad. The center, with wooden houses, log cabins and old shops on Main Street, is a protected historic district.

The village is the base for Denali expeditions. At the Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station climbers register before attempting the climb, and visitors can find exhibits about the mountain and the history of ascents. In the small village cemetery there is a memorial to climbers who died on the mountain.

At the end of Main Street, the riverside park at the meeting of the waters offers views of Denali and the Alaska Range on clear days. The old log schoolhouse houses a local history museum.

The village has cafés, restaurants, galleries and craft shops. In summer it is busy with visitors arriving by train and bus.
