About Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake National Park was established in 1902 and protects the caldera left by the collapse of Mount Mazama after an eruption about 7,700 years ago. The crater filled over centuries with snow and rain, forming a lake about 590 meters deep, the deepest in the United States. With no rivers feeding or draining it, the lake has very clear water and an intense blue color.

The Rim Drive, about 53 km long, circles the crater rim and has dozens of viewpoints. In the middle of the lake, Wizard Island is a younger volcanic cone; to the northeast, Phantom Ship is a rock formation that resembles a boat. Rim Village, on the south rim, has a visitor center, a historic lodging building and the park’s most visited viewpoint.

The park receives heavy snow: the rim is often snow‑covered from October through June, and much of the Rim Drive opens only in summer. Trails lead to peaks such as Watchman and Garfield, with lake views. Entrance is paid, and some national parks charge an additional fee for foreign visitors; check the park website.
