About Jacksonville Historic District

Jacksonville was founded in 1852 after gold was discovered in a local stream, and it became the most important town in southern Oregon for a time. When the railroad was routed through Medford at the end of the 19th century, Jacksonville stopped growing, which helped preserve its historic downtown.

More than a hundred historic brick and wood structures form a National Historic Landmark district. The main street has shops, galleries and restaurants in 19th‑century buildings, and Victorian houses surround the center. The historic cemetery on the hill tells the story of pioneers and Chinese miners from the gold rush.

In summer, an outdoor music festival takes place on the grounds of an old mansion. Signs and walking routes explain the history of each building.
