About Ecola State Park
Ecola State Park spans about 15 km of coastline between Cannon Beach and Seaside, with fir and cedar forest on the cliffs. The name comes from a whale that stranded in the area, which the Lewis and Clark expedition visited in 1806 to obtain blubber.
The Ecola Point viewpoint offers one of the best-known coastal views, with Haystack Rock and the beach rocks in the background. At Indian Beach, a small cove beach, there are often surfers. About 2 km out to sea sits the decommissioned Tillamook Rock lighthouse on a rocky island.
Trails connect the overlooks and beaches, including a section of a trail that retraces the expedition’s route. The access road is narrow and winding, and landslides sometimes close parts of the park.
