About Fort Clatsop
In November 1805, the expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark reached the Pacific after crossing the continent on orders from the United States government. The group built a wooden fort near the mouth of the Columbia and spent the rainy winter there until March 1806.
Today’s fort is a replica, constructed from drawings in the expedition’s journals, located in a forested area southwest of Astoria. It is part of the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park. In summer, rangers dressed in period clothing give demonstrations of firing, leather tanning and candle making.
The visitors center has exhibits about the expedition and about the Clatsop people, who lived in the region and helped the group survive the winter. Trails run through the forest down to the river, including a section that leads to the sea.
