About Pikes Peak Cog Railway
The Pikes Peak cog railway began operating in 1891 and climbs from Manitou Springs, at about 2,000 meters, to the mountain summit at 4,302 meters. It is one of the highest cog railways in the world and underwent a complete rebuild, reopening in 2021 with new tracks and trains.
The trip takes about one hour and ten minutes each way. The train passes through pine and aspen forests, crosses the tree line, and reaches alpine tundra, where marmots and bighorn sheep sometimes appear. At the top, passengers have about 40 minutes at the summit visitor center.
The train is operated by a private company, and the season and frequency vary throughout the year. In winter, the trip may stop before the summit because of snow and wind.
