About Pikes Peak
Pikes Peak, at 4,302 meters, is one of the most visited mountains in the United States. In 1893, teacher Katharine Lee Bates climbed to the summit and wrote the poem that became the lyrics of “America the Beautiful,” one of the country’s best-known patriotic songs.
The Pikes Peak Highway, a toll road of about 31 km, rises from the town of Cascade to the summit, with viewpoints, lakes, and hairpin turns. The road hosts a world-famous hillclimb race every year. In summer, driving to the top requires a timed entry reservation, and there are shuttle buses from a mid-road pick-up point.
At the summit, a visitor center opened in 2021 with exhibits, a cafe, and terraces with views of the plains and the Rockies. The other way up is the cog railway that departs from Manitou Springs.
