About Garden of the Gods
The Garden of the Gods is a municipal park of Colorado Springs with red sandstone formations that were uplifted nearly vertically when the Rockies formed. The rock blades, some over 90 meters high, contrast with the snow-capped Pikes Peak in the background. The park is a national natural landmark.
The Central Garden Trail, paved and flat, passes among the largest rocks, such as the North Gateway and the Kissing Camels. Other trails lead to less-visited points, and Balanced Rock, perched on a narrow base, sits beside the road. Climbing is allowed with a permit.
The family that donated the land to the city in 1909 required that the park remain free to enter, and it is so to this day. The visitor center at the east entrance has exhibits on geology and fossils and a terrace with views of the rocks.
