About Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden opened in 1875 and is one of the oldest zoos in the United States. The original Reptile House, dating from 1875, is still standing and is one of the oldest zoo buildings in the country.

The zoo is known for endangered-species breeding programs and for Fiona the hippo, who became famous on social media. Main areas include the African savanna, the elephant trail, the big cats, the gorillas and an insectary. The botanical gardens fill the grounds, with thousands of plant species and spring blooms.

In winter, the Festival of Lights decorates the zoo with millions of lights, and in spring Zoo Blooms highlights the tulips and flowering trees.
