About Ernest Hemingway Birthplace Home
Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in this wooden Victorian house with a tower and porch, in his maternal grandparents’ home in Oak Park. He lived in the town until finishing high school, before leaving for journalism and World War I.
The house was restored by the Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park with furniture and objects from the late 19th century, some from the family, and shows the room where the writer was born and the environment in which he spent his early years. Guided tours tell of Hemingway’s childhood and life in Oak Park at the time.
A few blocks away is the house where the family lived afterward, which is a private residence.
