About Bonaventure Cemetery
Bonaventure occupies the grounds of a former plantation on the banks of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. It became a private cemetery in 1846 and passed to the city in 1907. The avenues beneath live oaks draped in Spanish moss and the marble sculptures on the graves create the landscape.
Among the graves are those of composer Johnny Mercer, born in Savannah, and the statue of Gracie Watson, a girl who died in 1889. The cemetery became famous worldwide with the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1994) and the film based on it.
Visiting is self-guided, and a volunteer association organizes guided tours on some days.
