About Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter was built beginning in 1829 on an artificial island at the entrance to Charleston Harbor. On April 12, 1861, forces from South Carolina, which had seceded from the Union, opened fire on the federal garrison occupying the fort. The attack started the American Civil War.
The fort was bombarded during the war and lost much of its walls. What you see today are the lower brick walls, cannons and a battery added in the late 19th century. A small museum inside the fort tells the story of the siege and the war.
The island is reached only by the National Park Service ferry, which departs from Liberty Square in the city center and from Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant. The crossing takes about 30 minutes, with roughly an hour on the fort. Fort Sumter forms a historic park with Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island.
