About House of the Seven Gables
The House of the Seven Gables was built in 1668 for Captain and merchant John Turner and is one of the oldest wooden houses in New England. It became famous through the novel The House of the Seven Gables, which Nathaniel Hawthorne published in 1851, inspired by the house of a cousin.
The guided tour goes through rooms with period furniture and a narrow staircase hidden behind a fireplace. On the same property is the house where Hawthorne was born in 1804, moved there in the 20th century, and gardens facing the harbor.
The house is managed by a nonprofit organization created in 1908 by Caroline Emmerton, who used admission income to help immigrant families.
