About Harvard University
Harvard was founded in 1636 by the Massachusetts Bay colonists and was named for John Harvard, a minister who left his library and half his estate to the school. It is the country’s oldest institution of higher education.
The heart of the campus is Harvard Yard, a tree-lined courtyard surrounded by brick buildings such as Massachusetts Hall, dating from 1720, and the Widener Library. The John Harvard statue stands in front of University Hall. The yard is open, and students lead guided walking tours.
Nearby are the Harvard Art Museums, with European, Asian and American art, and the Harvard Museum of Natural History, with the glass flowers made by Bohemian artisans in the 19th century for the study of botany.
