Atlanta, the capital of Georgia, grew in the 19th century as a railroad hub and today is the center of one of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. South. Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world, makes the city a gateway to the South and a connection point to many parts of the country.

Around Centennial Olympic Park, built for the 1996 Olympic Games, are the Georgia Aquarium, one of the largest in the world, and the World of Coca-Cola, dedicated to the drink created in the city in 1886. East of downtown on Auburn Avenue, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park includes the church where he preached, his tomb and the street where he was born.

In Midtown, the High Museum of Art and the Atlanta Botanical Garden are near Piedmont Park, the largest park in the central area. About 20 km to the west, Six Flags Over Georgia has roller coasters and a water park.
