About Maroon Bells

The Maroon Bells are two neighboring peaks, Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak, both over 4,200 meters, formed by layers of sedimentary rock that give the slopes their wine-red color. They are in the Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness of the White River National Forest, at the end of a valley about 15 km from Aspen.

The most visited spot is Maroon Lake, at the foot of the peaks, where the mountain is reflected in the water on calm mornings. A short trail circles the lake, and another trail of about 3 km each way climbs to Crater Lake, closer to the cliffs. Longer trails cross the passes of the wilderness area.

In summer and autumn, Maroon Creek Road is closed to private cars for most of the day, and access is by shuttle buses that depart from Aspen Highlands with advance reservation. There are also parking spaces available by reservation. In winter the road closes because of snow, and the lake can only be reached by cross-country skiing, snowshoes or guided tours.

In late September the valley aspens turn yellow, and this is the busiest time of year.
