About Aspen Mountain

Aspen Mountain, which locals call Ajax, is the ski mountain that rises directly from downtown Aspen. The Silver Queen gondola departs from a plaza a short walk from the shopping streets and takes you to the summit, at about 3,400 meters altitude, climbing more than 900 meters.

The mountain opened as a ski area in the 1940s and is one of the four resorts in Aspen Snowmass, along with Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass. The runs are intermediate and advanced on narrow, forested slopes, and there are no beginner runs: beginners are directed to the other mountains.

In summer the gondola runs for hikers and bikers, and the summit has a restaurant, viewpoints and outdoor programming. The view spans the Elk Mountains and the Roaring Fork valley.
