About Tweetsie Railroad

Tweetsie Railroad opened in 1957 and is regarded as North Carolina’s first theme park. The name comes from the nickname of an old narrow-gauge railway in the region, whose steam locomotive was brought back to the mountains for the park.

The main attraction is a roughly 5 km ride on a steam-powered train during which actors stage robberies and shootouts in the style of western movies. The mock town has a saloon with dance and music shows, a blacksmith shop and period stores.

On the hilltop, a children’s rides area has a carousel, Ferris wheel and small roller coasters, and there is a petting zoo with goats, deer and other animals. Children can also pan for stones and gold.

The park is open from spring through the end of the year, with more days in summer, Halloween events in autumn and Christmas decorations in December.
