About The Blowing Rock
The Blowing Rock is a rock outcrop at about 1,200 meters above sea level, over the Johns River gorge. Updrafts that rise through the valley are so strong that light objects thrown from the rock often return upward — a phenomenon that gave the site and the village their names.
A local legend, linked to the Cherokee and Catawba peoples, tells of a young man who threw himself from the rock and was returned by the wind. The overlook has been operated as a tourist attraction since 1933, with paths, fenced viewpoints and gardens.
From the top, the view opens to the mountain ridgelines, the gorge and, on clear days, Grandfather Mountain in the distance.
There is also a small exhibit about the site’s and village’s history, and a short trail through rhododendron woods.
