About Grandfather Mountain
Grandfather Mountain is one of the highest and oldest peaks in the Blue Ridge, with rocky ridgelines that, seen from afar, resemble the profile of an old man, the origin of its name. Part of it is a private park maintained by a nonprofit foundation; the rest is state parkland with mountain trails.
A winding road climbs the slope to Linville Peak, where the Mile High Swinging Bridge stands — a 1952 suspension bridge about 69 meters long at over 1,600 meters altitude that spans a chasm between two summits. From the bridge, the view opens over the ridgelines and, on clear days, far into the distance.
Along the way, the Wilson Center nature center has exhibits on the mountain’s geology, plants and animals, and outdoor habitats house black bears, otters, cougars and eagles that cannot live free.
Trails such as the Grandfather Trail follow the ridgelines, with ladders and support cables, and require preparation. The mountain is a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve.
