About Tolmin Museum

The Tolmin Museum (Tolminski muzej) is the regional museum of the upper Soča Valley and is housed in a manor in the center of Tolmin. It also manages exhibitions spread across the valley, such as those at the Kluže fortress and the church of Javorca.

The permanent exhibition traces the region’s history from prehistory. One important section covers the Sveta Lucija culture of the Iron Age, known for the necropolises found at Most na Soči, with thousands of burials and bronze objects. Another displays rural life and high‑pasture practices, including cheese production and village customs.

World War I has its own rooms, presenting the Isonzo front as seen from Tolmin, which remained on the Austro‑Hungarian side for most of the war. Near the town, in Loče, is the German ossuary, a memorial to German soldiers who died on the front.

The museum has reduced hours outside summer and hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
