About Tolmin Gorges
The Tolmin Gorges (Tolminska korita) lie north of the town, where the Tolminka and the Zadlaščica run between narrow limestone walls and meet. The confluence, at about 180 meters elevation, is the lowest point of Triglav National Park and its southernmost entrance.
A roughly 2 km circuit, with steps and footbridges, runs through both gorges. In the Tolminka the gorge is so narrow that you see the sky through a slit, and in a small cave next to the water a thermal spring of about 20 °C emerges, visible when the river is low. In the Zadlaščica a triangular rock became wedged between the walls above the water and is called the Bear’s Head (Medvedova glava).
Above, the Devil’s Bridge (Hudičev most), built in 1907 and later reinforced, crosses the Tolminka at about 60 meters height. Nearby, Zadlaška cave, also called Dante’s cave, can be viewed from the entrance. The Zadlaščica is a sanctuary for marble trout.
The gorges are open from spring to autumn, with paid admission, and close in winter.
