About Kobarid Museum

The Kobariški muzej, in the centre of Kobarid, is dedicated to the Isonzo front, where Italian and Austro‑Hungarian forces fought from 1915 to 1917 in twelve battles along the Soča Valley and the mountains. The focus is the last of these, in October 1917, known as the Battle of Kobarid or Caporetto, the Italian name for the town.

In that battle, Austro‑Hungarian and German troops broke through the Italian lines and forced a long retreat to the Piave River. The episode appears in Ernest Hemingway’s novel A Farewell to Arms. The museum reconstructs the events with photographs, weapons, uniforms, letters, everyday objects from the trenches and a large model of the valley showing the positions of the armies.

The tone emphasizes the suffering of soldiers and civilians rather than triumph. In 1993 the museum received the Council of Europe Museum Prize. It also presents the history of the Kobarid region before and after the war.

The museum is open every day of the year and organises guided visits to the Kobarid Historical Trail, which passes by the Italian ossuary, trenches and the Kozjak waterfall.
