About Kluže Fortress
Kluže Fortress (Trdnjava Kluže) blocks the narrow passage where the Koritnica river enters the Bovec basin, above a gorge about 70 meters deep. The place has been a strategic passage for centuries: an initial wooden fortification was built in the 15th century against Turkish incursions, and in 1797 Napoleon’s troops captured the fort after fighting in the gorge.
The building you see today was constructed by Austria-Hungary between 1881 and 1882, in stone, with thick walls and embrasures, and a bridge that crosses the gorge. In World War I the fortress was on the Isonzo front line. Higher up, on the slope of Mount Rombon, lie the ruins of Forte Hermann, from 1900, which supported Kluže and was bombarded during the war; it is reached on foot in about half an hour.
Inside the fortress there are exhibitions arranged with the Tolmin Museum on the region’s history, archaeology, nature and the Isonzo front. On some days guided visits are offered to a tunnel of about 400 meters excavated under the fort.
The museum is open on weekends in spring and daily from June to September; during the rest of the year the fortress can be seen from the outside.
