About Mangart Road
The Mangart Road (Mangartska cesta) branches off the road between Bovec and the Predel Pass, near the Mlinč viaduct, at about 1,090 meters, and climbs roughly 12 km to around 2,055 meters, just below the Mangart saddle (Mangartsko sedlo) at 2,072 meters. It is the highest road in Slovenia.
Built in 1938 and now protected as a monument, the road is narrow, with tight turns and five tunnels carved into the rock. In several sections only one car can pass at a time, and you may need to reverse or wait in turnouts. The ascent can be done by car, motorcycle, or by well-prepared cyclists on a bike.
From the upper parking area the view opens to the Koritnica valley and the Julian Alps to the south, and to the Fusine lakes in Italy to the north. From there trails lead across the high meadow, rich in alpine flowers in early summer, and to the routes up Mangart’s summit, at 2,679 meters, which require experience and, on some routes, via ferrata equipment.
The road is open from late spring through autumn, weather and snow permitting, and is closed in winter. A toll is charged for use.

How to get there
From Bovec, follow the Predel Pass road, pass Log pod Mangartom, and turn at the signed exit near the Mlinč viaduct. The drive to the top takes about an hour.
Tip
Drive slowly and use your horn on blind corners. Bring a warm layer: at the top the wind is cold even in summer. If you hike near the saddle, stick to marked trails and don’t go alone.
