About Church of Mary of the Snows

The parish church of Solčava, dedicated to Mary of the Snows (Marija Snežna), sits on a small hill above the village center, with the cemetery around it and views over the Savinja Valley. The current Gothic building was raised between 1461 and 1485 on earlier foundations, and the tower was added in 1710.

The church’s main treasure is the medieval statue of the Virgin, known as the Marija of Solčava, venerated in the region for centuries. The side entrance preserves mural paintings, and beside the church is the small chapel of Saint Anne. A staircase and a path climb from the village center up to the churchyard.

Near the village, by the Savinja, grows the Solčava yew, an old and well-known local tree. The Rinka visitor center in Solčava’s center has information about the church, the valleys and the area’s trails.
