About Forma Viva Portorož

The Forma Viva of Portorož is an open-air sculpture park on the small Seča peninsula, south of Portorož’s centre. It began in 1961, when Slovenian sculptors Jakob Savinšek and Janez Lenassi organised an international stone sculpture symposium: artists from various countries worked there for a few weeks and left their works in the place.

The name, in Latin, means living form. The idea was repeated in other Slovenian towns, each with a different material: wood in Kostanjevica na Krki, steel in Ravne na Koroškem and concrete in Maribor. In Portorož the material is stone, mostly Istrian limestone.

The park gathers more than 130 sculptures by artists from over 30 countries, spread across a lawn among olive and pine trees. Other works from the symposium are in squares in Piran, Izola and Koper. The collection is maintained by the Piran Coastal Galleries.

From the top of the peninsula the view covers Portorož bay, Lucija marina and the Sečovlje salt pans. The park is open, without gates, and is near a small traditional wooden boatyard in Seča.
