About Portorož Central Beach
Portorož’s central beach (Centralna plaža) runs along the bay promenade in front of the centre, between the passenger pier and the area of the former bathing pavilions. Since much of the Slovenian coast is rocky, the beach has a strip of sand and shaded lawns, as well as piers and steps to enter the water.
Portorož bay is sheltered from westerly winds, and the sea is usually calm and shallow near the shore. In summer there are often beach services such as showers and chair and umbrella rentals. The water is generally suitable for swimming from June to September.
Portorož developed as a health resort. Since the late 19th century it has used brine and mud from the nearby salt pans in treatments, and the name, port of the roses, comes from an old church dedicated to Saint Mary of the Roses. The promenade continues along the shore to Piran in about a half-hour walk.
Outside the bathing season the beach is quiet and used for walking and sunbathing on mild days.
