About Piran Town Walls

The walls of Piran (Mestno obzidje) were built in phases: first they enclosed the town's core, then they reached the tip of the peninsula and, finally, they climbed the hill toward the church, closing off the whole peninsula. The best-preserved section is on the top of the hill, east of the center, and was strengthened to protect the town from Ottoman raids.

In this stretch the walls have battlements and several towers, and you can walk along them via stairs and walkways. Old gates, such as the Raspor Gate, open onto the streets below.

From the top you get the most complete view of Piran: the red roofs, the St. George bell tower, Tartini Square and the tip of the peninsula with the lighthouse, all surrounded by the sea. On clear days you can see the Italian coast and the Alps.

There is an entrance fee, and access is on IX. korpusa Street in the upper part of town. The route up there climbs steep streets with no shade.
