About Tito Square
Tito Square (Titov trg) is the heart of Koper’s historic center, which in the past was an island connected to the mainland by landfills. The city came under Venetian rule in 1278 and became the capital of Venetian Istria, known by its Latin name Caput Histriae, from which the Italian name Capodistria derives.
On the south side of the square stands the Praetor's Palace (Pretorska palača), the seat of the Venetian governor, formed in the 15th century from two 13th-century houses joined by a gallery. The façade bears coats of arms, medallions and battlements, and the palace currently houses the town hall and the tourist information center. On the north side, the Loggia, dating from 1463 with Gothic arches, served as a meeting place.
On the east side, the Assumption Cathedral and the bell tower dominate the square. Other buildings, like the former arsenal and the Foresteria Palace, complete the ensemble, one of the best-preserved examples of the Venetian period on the coast.
From the square run narrow streets, such as Čevljarska, which passes under an arch of the palace, and which lead to Prešeren Square, with the Da Ponte fountain, and to the port. The center can be explored on foot in a few hours.
