About Dolenjska Museum
The Dolenjska Museum (Dolenjski muzej) is in Novo mesto’s old town, in a group of buildings around a garden, between the main square and the cathedral hill. The oldest building, the Križatija, belonged to the knights of the Teutonic Order. The museum was founded in 1950 and cares for the heritage of the whole region.
The highlight is the archaeological collection. Excavations in Novo mesto and the surroundings revealed hundreds of Iron Age graves, dated between the 8th and 4th centuries BCE, when the region was a center of the Hallstatt culture. Finds include the situlae, bronze bucket-shaped vessels decorated with scenes of processions, banquets, hunts and battles, as well as helmets, weapons, amber and bronze jewelry and colored glass beads.
Other rooms cover the region’s recent history, ethnology and rural life. In the museum garden there are ancient stones, and a stair path leads up to the cathedral hill.
The museum also manages the Jakčev dom on the main square, which displays part of the more than 800 works the painter Božidar Jakac donated to his native town, including views of the houses of the Breg.
