The city
Main town of southeastern Slovenia, founded in 1365 on a bend of the Krka. The old town has Glavni trg square, with arcades and the town hall, the houses of the Breg along the river, the Franciscan church and the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, with a Tintoretto painting on the high altar. The Dolenjska Museum preserves the situlae from the Iron Age. Nearby are Otočec Castle and the Pleterje Charterhouse.

The local experience
Regional museum of Novo mesto, with one of the main Iron Age collections in Central Europe: decorated bronze situlae, amber jewelry and glass beads. It also includes a gallery with works by the painter Božidar Jakac.
Castle on an island in the middle of the Krka River, 7 km from Novo mesto, mentioned in 1252. It is Slovenia’s only water-surrounded castle and is reached by two wooden bridges.
The only Carthusian monastery still inhabited in Slovenia, founded in the early 15th century by the Counts of Celje, at the foot of the Gorjanci hills. Beside it is an open-air museum with 19th-century rural houses.
A Gothic church at the highest point of Novo mesto’s old town, cathedral since 2006, with a Saint Nicholas altarpiece painted by Tintoretto around 1582 and a tower with a viewpoint over the Krka.
