About Maribor Synagogue
Maribor’s synagogue is on Židovska ulica, the Jewish street, in what was the medieval Jewish quarter, just above the Lent riverside. The Gothic building was completed in the 14th century and is considered one of the oldest preserved medieval synagogues in Europe. Maribor’s Jewish community was among the most important in the Eastern Alpine region.
In 1497 Jews were expelled from Styria, and in 1501 the synagogue was converted into a Catholic church dedicated to All Saints. Later it served as storage and housing. From the late 20th century the building was restored and in 2011 became home to the Jewish Cultural Heritage Centre Synagogue Maribor, a public institution. In 2015 it was declared a cultural monument of national importance.
The interior hosts exhibitions, concerts, lectures and literary events. In front of it, the first Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) installed in Slovenia commemorate Maribor Jews murdered in the Holocaust. Beside the synagogue stands the Jewish Tower, part of the old city walls.
