About Mariborsko Pohorje

Pohorje is a wooded mountain range that stretches west and south of Maribor, with summits above 1,300 metres. The slope facing the city, Mariborsko Pohorje, is the main leisure area for locals and one of Slovenia’s largest ski resorts, with runs that descend almost to the outskirts.

The Pohorska vzpenjača gondola departs from the lower station, about 5 km from the centre at roughly 330 metres altitude, and reaches the upper station in around 10 minutes at just over 1,000 metres, near the Bolfenk area. Cable transport on this route has operated since 1957; the current red cabins date from 2009. Up there you’ll find the church of Saint Wolfgang (Bolfenk), a viewpoint and the start of forest trails.

In summer the slope has a bike park and paths for hiking and mountain biking, and from several clearings you can see Maribor and the Drava plain. In winter the ski season generally runs from December to March, if there is snow, and the lower section has hosted women’s Alpine World Cup races.
