About Lent
Lent is Maribor’s oldest quarter, along the north bank of the Drava, between the Old Bridge (Stari most) and the Justice Tower. It was the city’s river port, where wooden barges set off downriver carrying logs from Pohorje and Carinthia. Today it is a broad riverside promenade with low houses, cafés and steps that climb up to the center.
At the two ends of the neighborhood stand towers from the old fortifications. To the east, the Water Tower (Vodni stolp), pentagonal and 16th-century, protected the river; to the west, the Justice Tower (Sodni stolp) marks the end of the walls. In the middle are the house of the Stara trta and, a few steps above, the former Jewish street, with the medieval synagogue and the Jewish Tower.
In June, Lent usually hosts a festival of about two weeks, with concerts, theater and dance on outdoor stages and a floating stage on the river. For the rest of the year, the neighborhood is where locals go for a stroll at dusk, when the sun lowers over the Drava.
