About Maribor Cathedral
Maribor Cathedral, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, stands on Slomškov trg, one of the quieter squares in the center, between the university and a small park. It began as a Romanesque basilica in the 13th century and acquired its current Gothic appearance in the 15th century, with Baroque chapels added later. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Maribor.
The church became a cathedral in 1859, when Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek moved the seat of the Lavant diocese to Maribor. Slomšek, a proponent of the Slovene language and organizer of the first schools in Slovene, was beatified in 1999, and his tomb inside the cathedral attracts many visitors. A statue of him stands in the square in front.
The bell tower has a viewpoint overlooking the roofs of the center, the Drava and Pohorje. The climb is by stairs and the tower is usually open in spring and summer at limited times; check before you go.
