About Maribor Castle
Maribor Castle (Mestni grad) stands on the northeastern edge of the old town, between Grajski trg and Trg svobode. It was built starting in 1478 as part of the city's defenses, and later renovations added a baroque staircase, the Loreto chapel and a decorated banquet hall. The city's first castle, mentioned in 1164, was located on the hill Piramida to the north, where ruins remain.
Since 1938 the building has housed the Regional Museum of Maribor (Pokrajinski muzej Maribor), one of the largest in the country. The permanent exhibitions, installed after a long renovation, trace the region’s history with archaeological and ethnological pieces, weapons, furniture, costumes and works by the Baroque sculptor Joseph Straub, as well as a display about the art of pharmacy.
On Grajski trg in front of the castle stands the column of Saint Florian, erected after a fire, and a plaque marks the spot where, in 1883, the first public electric lamp on Slovenian territory was switched on.
